Buffalo Theory wins Mayor's Cup with a strategic approachIn 2020, the Mayorâs Cup Regatta had less than ideal conditions that featured dark, gray skies with plenty of rain and lots of fog. This yearâs race was the polar opposite. Lake Champlain glistened, Saturday, and plenty of sailboats occupied its waters with clear blue skies above. Buffalo Theory, a boat from Winooski, Vermont, skippered by Bill Fastigi, won this yearâs Mayorâs Cup. Read more

In 2020, Sunrise Rotary in Plattsburgh agreed to partner with the Rotary Club of Francistown, Botswana, Africa, to dig a borehole (well) and distribute water to irrigate crops. Solar panels will be used to power the pumps. A 5,000-liter tank will be store the water. The Intended beneficiaries are community members that intend to farm a large area of donated land on the Inchwe river. Both food and plants will be grown and sold to provide an income to farmers. Some food will be kept to help feed the workers and their families. The Council in this area has agreed to donate adjacent land to the project if it is successful. The project is estimated to cost $12,000.00. Food security remains a challenge in Botswana, which has endured long periods of drought and high unemployment. This project provides employment, food, and hope to community members.

Sunrise Rotarians volunteer to clean-up local parks and trails to help celebrate National Trail DayThe Sunrise Rotary Club is proud to be a supporter of the LaPierre Lane Riverway Park from its inception and is now a steward of this unique community gem. A group of Sunrise Rotarians gathered on the morning of National Trail Day (June 6) to clean up the area and get it ready for the summer. Actually, as part of a larger community-wide effort, Sunrise Rotarians could be seen throughout the week cleaning-up at the Sunrise Rotary Wilcox Dock Pavilion, at the Sunrise Gazebo at the Samuel D. Champlain Park and at the Max Moore Memorial Tree House (where the club played a leading role in the building of this universally accessible treehouse at a primary trailhead on the Saranac River Trail).

Past Presidents applaud Libby QuĂŠguiner At the end of June, the close of the 2019-2020 Rotary year, Sunrise Rotary's past presidents presented Libby QuĂŠguiner with a special gift to acknowledge her distinguished leadership during her presidential year. There is no script or manual on how to manage a service organization during a crisis and yet Libby appeared so comfortable redefining how we connect as a club during the pandemic. Libby did an outstanding job organizing and conducting our meetings remotely and keeping us all connected and focused each and every week. Libby also provided members with opportunities to volunteer and to give back by organizing local park and trails clean-up, saying thank you to the healthcare workers at the hospital, donating to the local food shelf, and made all members feel a part of a larger family. Thank you Libby! Above is a photo of Libby unveiling the 2019 Sunrise Rotary Mayor's Cup logo at a press conference at City Hall and presenting Mayor Read with the 'first' t-shirt.

The Max Moore Memorial Tree House, built along the Saranac River Trail near the Plattsburgh Police Department headquarters, is a universally accessible treehouse, thanks to a special ramp that helps anyone, even those with mobility issues. Club members, Kathy Duley, Kathy Snow, Laura Lacey Curler, Thom Loreman, Tom DeFayette and Libby Queguiner worked hard weeding and cleaning out the garden and surrounding areas. Special thanks to Don Duley, your continued support of our club is appreciated! Approximately 9 new plants were added, along with weed blocker fabric.

Good afternoon fellow Rotarians - With permission from Maria, I wanted to send out a quick announcement for an upcoming YMCA event. We are holding our 1st annual Camp Jericho Beautification Day, this Saturday June 9th from 11-3. Our wonderful camp that serves over 600 children during the summer months is in need of some well-needed love. We are looking for volunteers from Rotary to come up and help with some projects- painting, trimming, raking etc. Only recently had notice a faded "Rotary Lodge" sign on our main barn at Camp Jericho (see attached photo), and thought it time to re-engage our club with this wonderful camp that many of you know or know someone who has attended. If you are able to make please let me know at jihne@plattsburghymca.org. The event is family friendly and we will also have a BBQ that afternoon. While we have some equipment- feel free to bring clippers and work gloves. Thank you all so much Justin

.jpg) It feels really weird to already be eight months down with exchange because Iâm at a point where Iâm really used to my life here. It doesnât feel real that I have to go home in 88 days⌠to be totally honest I really donât want to at all. Iâd love to for a week, but I feel really at home here. If anything, this exchange has made me much more mature and independent and Iâve worked a lot on myself, Itâs really made me a lot happier and grow a lot as a person. I hate thinking that I have less than three months because no one else understands how little time that actually is. I left my life in the US for a year but now Iâm leaving the life I built in a year for good.

Thank you for the wonderful donation of $750 to the Adirondack Engineers 4H robotics group. It is very much appreciated. The team will be sending their thanks soon. I just wanted to give you a small update. We had a blast at our last competition in Albany on January 13. We did very well. We earned the following awards: --Think Award: First place (for innovative robot design and reliable performance) --Control Award: Second place (for software, algorithm development, and driver period enhancements) --Inspire Award: Second Place (second place team overall at the completion) --Finalist Alliance: (played, but lost, the final competition match) Our next competition is at Pace University in Westchester on February 11. We qualified for this Regional Competition because of our previous performance at qualifying competitions. We will be competing to earn a spot to continue on to SuperRegionals, held in Scranton, Pennsylvania. There is a good chance that we will be competing at Essex High School in Vermont on February 24. We are second on the wait list, but have been asked to send in our registration fee. That usually means they feel a spot will open up for us. We are happy to invite Rotary members to watch either competition, although the Vermont one is much closer. Perhaps a Rotary cheering section, as was mentioned! If interested, spectators should arrive at Essex High School by 10:30am â that is usually when the competition rounds and opening ceremonies begin. I have attached a couple of pictures from Albany. I hope all is well and give our best to Sunrise Rotary. - Brian

.jpg) Members of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Plattsburgh joined together to help give back to the community by volunteering at several annual holiday events in 2017. On November 20th Sunrise Rotarians trimmed a holiday tree, sponsored by the club, to help support the Advocacy Resource Center of Clinton County NY (ARC). Currently over 500 individuals and their families benefit from the wide variety of services provided by ARC, such as vocational programs, community integration, therapeutic intervention and residential options. At several times throughout the year Sunrise Rotarians volunteer at the St. Peter's Soup Kitchen, and on a snowy December 12th evening, nine club members helped to serve dinner at the soup kitchen at Seton Academy. In December, Sunrise Rotary also donated $1,000 to the St. Peter's Soup Kitchen to provide additional support to local families in need.

.. Ashtyn Moore is photographed here at her favorite cafe writing the Sunrise Rotary Club about her experience as a youth exchange student in Denmark. 'Whoa. Five months! The past month has been pretty tough to be honest. A young family member passed away while serving in our navy, so its been awful to not be around my family, but I have extremely great support here and everyone was so sweet to make me feel better. That meaning rotary members, friends, family, and people who barely know me. Not to mention the support from everyone in New York and district 7040. Aside from that, my exchange as usual has made me happy once again. In December, I had a few bumps that I wasnât used to because of the event that took place and the reminder of not being home for Christmas, but it wasnât too drastic because since the first month in Denmark, Iâve realized that this is my second home and planned to come back and continue to make it my home.

Rotary Clubs registered more than 3,400 World Polio Events in 102 countries at endpolio.org. That's twice as many events as last year! Plattsburgh's Noon and Sunrise Rotary Clubs, along with the SUNY Rotaract Club, joined forces at the Champlain Centre Mall over the weekend of October 20, 2017. Every 15 minutes a different cyclist mounted the stationary bike donated for the event by Dick's Sporting Goods. In all, over $3,400 was raised - and then doubled - by a matching grant courtesy of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation! Oh, Sunrise Rotarian, Joanne Dahlen, was honored with the 'Best Dressed' Award on the bike!

Hello everyone! So far, my stay in Denmark has been absolutely amazing!!! Iâve met so many amazing people â both Danish and exchange students â and Iâve really been getting better with the language. For example, all my grandparents here donât speak ANY English except for my mormor (motherâs mom). One day my bedstefar (dadâs dad) came over and I was the only person home ⌠my youngest sibling wasnât even home, and at least sheâs speaks a little English. On top of him not speaking English, his dialect is almost impossible to understand ... so he came inside and I heard âgoddav!â and my stomach just dropped!! Hahaha! I knew this would be interesting. So, we begin a very simple conversation after asking âvil du have kaffe?â (would you like coffee?) which was about his trip with his wife to Switzerland and how it snowed and I didnât know the word for snow at the moment so that became a very intense game of charades!!

Thank you to Mel Defayette and the Town of Plattsburgh for helping Sunrise Rotary host their second annual kayaking event on the Saranac River. The Cadyville Beach provided the perfect destination to put-in and take-out on the Saranac. Sunrise Rotarians and friends were all welcome, free of charge, to enjoy an evening paddle on the river on August 31, 2017. Next year there is talk of hosting two events on the river. Stay tuned!

City officials in Plattsburgh are working to make the downtown center more appealing to tourists. One of the newest initiatives got a boost recently when the Sunrise Rotary announced it will sponsor a plan to create an Arts Walk in the center city. Last weekend the Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary hosted the Mayorâs Cup Regatta, the largest sailing race on Lake Champlain. The group also supported a Landlubber Mural Project that brought nautical-themed drawings to buildings across downtown.

The "Spirit of Ianelli" Award was established in 2010 in honor of the late Mayor John Ianelli, former Mayor of the City of Plattsburgh and co-founder of the Mayorâs Cup Regatta in 1977. This honor is bestowed upon an individual â sailor or landlubber â who exemplifies the same âcommunity does matterâ spirit that inspired Mayor Ianelli 38 years ago, empowering our lake community to thrive, not only on race day, but every day. In 2016, the Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival Committee named Gordie Little the 2016 "Spirit of Ianelli" Award honoree. Sunrise Rotaryâs Mayorâs Cup Co-Chair Joanne K. Dahlen said that selecting Gordie Little as this yearâs honoree was an easy decision to make. âWe only wish we had the opportunity to present Gordie the award in person and not posthumously,â said Joanne.

April has possibly been the best month of my exchange so far. The first week was my mother's visit to Japan, she stayed from the 1st to the 8th. I was beyond excited to see her for the first time after 7 months, and I was so happy that she could meet my host families and host Rotary club. Together with each of my host families, we took day trips around the Kansai area; Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka, and we introduced her to some of our favorite Japanese foods. I was so excited to show her around my city, my school, and my favorite places in Osaka. I especially loved surprising her with how far I've come with my Japanese language skills, my ability to navigate the train and subway systems, and even my chopstick skills!

Happy New Years from Japan! It has been a great start to 2017. As Japan's biggest holiday, New Year's greetings and celebrations have lasted through this whole month. I started 2017 with my host family on a trip to a small and rural island off the coast of Osaka.

.jpg) ăăŤăĄăă(Good Day),
It is hard to believe it has already been a month since I've been here! These weeks have flown by and I am already starting to feel very at home. I am attending Osaka Sumiyoshi high school, and I am happy to say the students as well as the teachers are so incredibly friendly, never once have I had to sit alone, or to walk to a class by myself.
On an average school day I wake up at 6:00 and eat breakfast with my host family, I try to leave the house at 7:00 And begin my walk to the train station, I take the train to school for about 45 minutes (as I have had little experience with trains, this took some practice). School starts at 8:30 and goes until 4:30 most days.

Harsh winds and the threat of lightning did not prevent the 39th-Annual Mayorâs Cup Regatta from taking place Saturday on Lake Champlain, nor did it keep Plattsburghâs Michael Parsons from capturing the coveted Mayorâs Cup trophy. Parsons and skipper Peter Hall of Montreal, Quebec, helped lead the crew of Obelix to a victory in the Racing division, finishing with a corrected time of two hours, eight minutes and 50 seconds.

The 39th Annual Mayor’s Cup Regatta & Festival will honor the 2016 recipient of the “Spirit of Ianelli” Award on Saturday, July 9, 2016, and the Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival Committee is currently seeking nominations from the community for this prestigious award.
What is the “Spirit of Ianelli” Award?
The "Spirit of Ianelli" Award was established in 2010 in honor of the late Mayor John Ianelli, former Mayor of the City of Plattsburgh and co-founder of the Mayor’s Cup Regatta in 1977. This honor is bestowed upon one individual – sailor or landlubber – who exemplifies the same “community does matter” spirit that inspired Mayor Ianelli 39 years ago, empowering our lake community to thrive, not only on race day, but every day.
|
Deadline for nominations for the 2016 'Spirit of Ianelli' Award is Friday, June 24

An enthusiastic crew of international chefs set out a sumptuous four course dinner at the home of PJ Whitbeck in Plattsburgh on Saturday, May 7. The chefs included three Youth Exchange Rebounds, two Inbounds, one Outbound and two Rotarians. The international meal for eight was the grand prize of a Youth Exchange fundraiser raffle, won by Plattsburgh Sunrise member PJ Whitbeck for his family and guests. Funds go to help defray the cost of the Youth Exchange program.
Youth Exchange students from the area love to share their home cultures with dishes from their home countries which included food from Japan, Spain, Slovakia, Denmark, Turkey, Switzerland and Venezuela.
Guests at the event also learned how to dance the salsa and had their Turkish coffee grounds read by a Gypsy.

Six months over. Six months rich with a lifetime of new experiences, six months wearing all of the inconsolable pain and unimaginable joy that I alone may have have been able to carry. Half of a year in a foreign land, the adventure of a lifetime seemingly contained within the time between the rising and falling of the moon. No matter how hard I try, I can't shake the fear that my carefully executed dream will end when I wake up.

The Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary Club dedicated three years of fundraising efforts through its Mayor's Club Regatta celebration to create a legacy community project â a pavilion constructed at Wilcox Dock Park on Lake Champlain, Cumberland Avenue in the City of Plattsburgh. This project was dedicated July 12, 2012. The facility, which sits between Wilcox Dock and the City of Plattsburgh Healthy Lungs Trail, includes several picnic tables and offers scenic views of Lake Champlain.

.jpg) The Sunrise Rotary Club of Plattsburgh has an ongoing financial commitment to the ShelterBox organization to provide aid to victims of disasters wherever they happen.
ShelterBox delivers emergency shelter and other lifesaving supplies to help families begin to rebuild their lives after losing their homes and possessions following a natural disaster or humanitarian crisis.
Each ShelterBox is custom-packed depending on the needs of those affected by the disaster but often contains a family tent, water filter, blankets, cooking and eating utensils, tools, children’s activity pack, mosquito net and other items.

In November 2015 the Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary Club embarked on a fundraiser for ShelterBox that has benefits that reach as far as the remote West Lunga Forest, an African miombo woodland forest preserve in the northwest region of Zambia. But the benefits won't only be felt in Africa, they will also fund another ShelterBox that will eventually be shipped to a disaster zone somewhere in the world to save a family coping with the loss of their home.
Club members will sell bottles of African Bronze Honey harvested by farmers in that region of Zambia. A portion of the cost of each bottle is set aside to train and equip more Zambians in how to harvest honey — supporting entrepreneurship and beekeeping in Africa.

Plattsburgh Sunrise is proud of its support of the Max Moore Memorial Tree House.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony Ashley Cousens thanked Sunrise for their significant monetary contribution and thanked Kathy Duley and Joanne Dahlen in particular for their continued involvement as volunteers.
Kathy Duley represented Sunrise Rotary at the groundbreaking ceremony earlier in the year and held the 'ribbon' which was really a mural hand painted by children at the event this past Saturday.
Also on hand from Sunrise Rotary were Victoria Duley, Tom LaBombard, and Kjell Dahlen.

The Max Moore Memorial Tree House is built along the Saranac River Trail near the Plattsburgh Police Department headquarters in Plattsburgh, NY. The tree house is named after local pediatrician Dr. Heidi Moore's late son Max, who utilized wheelchair and would have loved to be able to play in a tree house if had the chance. Today people of all ages and abilities enjoy this unique universally accessible facility along the scenic Saranac River. Over several years Sunrise Rotary raised $25,000 to support the design and construction of the tree house. Sunrise Rotarians happily volunteer their time to keep the tree house and surrounding areas in pristine condition.

Farewell, it means goodbye, describes a departure…..This is my last day as President of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh Sunrise and luckily I do not have to say farewell. I am blessed to be able to continue to work with a club full of wonderful, committed, intelligent and sometimes outrageous people. What other group of people are so lively at 7:30 a.m.?
I will admit that this has been my favorite year so far in Rotary because I was able to interact with everyone in many different capacities. Every Tuesday started off with the Tom and Gerry show and then we enjoyed each other and learned from great speakers and visitors. We worked and played together on projects and activities from Winter Carnival to Literacy Challenge to Mayor’s Cup and so on.
When I first joined Rotary, I really didn’t understand its true meaning. Today I have a better understanding of its mission of service and fellowship, but I know I have so much more to learn. I look forward to being part of the club for years to come and carrying out its mission:
The mission of the Rotary Club of Plattsburgh Sunrise is to make a positive impact in
the lives of our members, and within our communities, by providing opportunities
for service and leadership at the local and international levels. We achieve this
through a committed, diverse and knowledgeable membership made stronger
through project work, fellowship and fun.
Thank you for an amazing journey!
Yours in Rotary,
Cheryl A. Lesser

On Saturday, November 8th, brave souls will take a dip or a slow crawl into the chilly waters of Lake Champlain at City Beach in Plattsburgh, NY. What is a Polar Plunge? A wild, crazy and FUN event to raise awareness and funds for the dedicated athletes of Special Olympics New York!
New this year, Mayor James Calnon of the City of Plattsburgh and Mayor Miro Weinberger of the City of Burlington, VT will “settle up” on their friendly wager made during the 37th Annual Mayor’s Cup Regatta. The challenge of Mayors was the revival of an old tradition. Mayor Calnon's NY boat, Odinn, narrowly beat Mayor Weinberger's VT boat, Buffalo Theory, resulting in Mayor Weinberger joining Mayor Calnon to participate in the 5th Annual Plattsburgh Polar Plunge together. The Mayors invite you to continue their friendly competition by making pledges for your favorite Mayor!

.jpg) Rotary International leaders from across Canada gathered recently in Toronto to present Prime Minister Stephen Harper with the Rotary Foundation Polio Eradication Champion Award, recognizing Canada's efforts to eliminate polio globally. Rotary District Governor Ariane Carriere of Cornwall, Ontario was among those attending the ceremony.
Carriere is a strong supporter of eradicating polio and recently headed up an event in Ottawa that brought together Rotarians from throughout the district she governs to raise funds for polio eradication. “Rotary International and its partners are very close.” Carriere said. “With a commitment of more than $580 million since 1988, Canada has been a major partner with Rotary International in the effort to eradicate polio. It was an honour to be part of the ceremony hosted by The Rotary Foundation.”
